LONDON, Nov. 14
Sir H. Wilkins, in a message sent from Deception Island, by radio, today, states: — One lone iceberg' greeted ns as we arrived, through tour snow squalls, at our: Antarctic base this evening.. Our two Lhckliead planes, the Los 'Angeles and the San Francisco, were awaiting us in their winter clothing, having outridden the snows, sleet, winds and fifty degrees below- zero. They„are apparently as secure and lit as when v’e left them eight months ago.
After a tine trip from Monte Video, we n-nproaehed Deception Island with caution, through heavy seas; After riding out the storm, we entered the bay only just in time, because two hours after nightfall, ice blocked the entrance that we had traversed. The men are now mooring the ship in semi-darkness.
WILKINS’ REPORTS
LONDON. Nov. 15
Sir H. Wilkins has radioed from Deception Island as follows: —“Unloading is in full swing. We inspected tilings ashore in the one line day which has followed the mooring at Melville, after which there has been had weather, and the snow lay deep over Deception Island. Our two aeroplanes are unscathed, except one stabiliser, which has been strained. It is easily repairable. The supplies are in perfect shape. The penguins trustfully and gravely watched us unloading.' A half gale sprang up during the second night. The wind force increased throughout the day, bringing rani"and sleet. The conditions are miserable and cold, yet the work goes on. We have unloaded automobiles to-day. Mieescnnm claims the credit of driving the first ordinary passenger automobile in Antarctica.”
