OBELISK UNVEILED

HASTINGS, Nov. 18

The Governor-General at Omaha this morning unveiled an obelisk to the memory of Renata Kawopo, who with his followers took part in the overthrow of Hau Han rebellion, 1860-1872.

HUTT BYE-ELECTION

lion. T. Will'ord tendered his resignation as member for Hutt .to-day, but will retain the portfolios of Defence and Justice till 7th December. The writ for the bye-election will probably be issued next Monday. The date of the election will be the 18th December.

REFORM CANDIDATE.

WELLINGTON, November 18

H. F. Johnston was selected by ballot over V. Jacobsen, as the Opposition candidate for Hutt seat. He is the fourth son of Sir Charles Johnston, Speaker of the Legislative Council at the time of his death. There are now four competitors, Bennett being an Independent. The election is expected about the middle of December.

GREYMOUTH, Nov. 18.

Mr W. Parsonage (Manager of the Blackball Mine) has tendered his resignation of the position.

AUCKLAND, 1 Nov. 18

Viscount Craigavan (Premier of Northern Ireland) was a passenger from Sydney by the Aorangi He said lie proposed to stay in New Zealand until next February. He wishes to enjoy a rest, avoid public meetings and speech-making. He is most anxious to meet all sections of the community, especially those of Ulster stock.. His heart was in the country, and orchards and dairying would be of special interest. He particularly wished to see the organisation which could capture 52 per cent, of the trade in cheese to England. Lord Craigavan, was met by ,the Hon Donald, representing the Government, Mr D. Ardell (Internal Affairs), Mr J. Entriean (Deputy Mayor) and J. Alexander, C.M.G.

A DOCTOR CHARGED

AUCKLAND, November 18

On Saturday evening as a tramcar was proceeding in Wellesley Street, a bottle fell on the roadway. Constable Whitehead, after making enquiries, arrested Dr Watkin Harper, aged 38 years, and charged him with drunkenness, and throwing bottles to. the danger of persons in the street. When accused appeared in Court this morning, he had to answer a further charge of wilfully damaging the. cell floor at the police station, to the extent of £l, !

Accused’s counsel got a remand on bail until Wednesday next.

SOLD rERS COMMISSION. AUCKLAND, Nov. 18.

There emerged from this morning’s sitting of the Returned Soldiers Rehabilitation' Commission., an outline of a scheme which will probably have a prominent place in the final report of the Commission.

It was suggested by the Chairman (Mr Barton, S.M.) that representative boards should bp set up in the four centres to assist the disabled men to find avenues of employment suitable for their temperament and aptitude. Mr Barton said there was legislation including the Reparation Act, Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act. and Pensions Act which would enable the Government to set up bodies in centres to co-ordinate and assist in finding suitable avenues of employment. The Chairman questioned Sir George Richardson who was of opinion that such hoards should not be composed solely of Government representatives so ll,oo , Government repicsentatives should be included.
