THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES

THE SESSION’S WORK. The oustanding features of the session s achievements were the increase in taxation and the' legislation to promote land settlement. In that the country had hoped for a reduction in taxation the Budget was a disappointment, but Sir Joseph Ward wisely decided that iiis first duty was to balance his accounts. In readjusting his taxation lie carried out his pledge to impose higher taxation on owners of b.0.ul acres, who under the kindlier regime of Reform had been let off too lightly. This increase in land taxation was part of the Government’s land policy; the other half was embodied in an Act for the greater encouragement of settlement. Here the Government acted vigorously where the previous Government had fumbled and halted. The Government was also as good as its word in the matter of unemployment relief. —Auckland Star,
