Two fires occurred at Greymouth yesterday. At 10.40 a.m there was an outbreak at a millinery shop in Boundary Street, owned, and,, occupied by Miss Balmy Saraty. The fire started in a room at the rear of the shop, used for domestic purposes. Miss Saraty had left a gas ring alight, while ,she had gone into another portion of the building. The flames gained contact with the wall, and when discovered had a strong hold. - (Fortunately the Brigade arrived in time to effect a good save, otherwise a serious conflagration would have occurred. The building was insured for £SOO, and the stock for £2OO, both policies being held by the /Mercantile and General Company. The fire damage is restricted to the room where the outbreak started, but it is understood that some of the stock was damaged- by water. At 9 o’clock last night there was another alarm, the scene of the outbreak being located in Blaekmore’s Lane, where the unoccupied residence oI the late Mrs McSherry was found to be in danger of destruction. The Brigade was quickly on the scene, and sueesessfully prevented the demolition of the house. The fire commenced in the leanto attached to the two-roomed cottage, and made its way up the wall, 'which was slightly charred. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, as the dwelling has been unoccupied for several weeks.
