PLAY PLEASES KING

The King and Queen, and <thc Duke and Duchess of York paid a surprise visit to the play “Journey’s End” to-night. This is tbe King’s fourth visit in the Theatre this week. The King sent for the author, Air Slierriff, after the second act, and said that be found the play most interesting, ant! was enjoying it very much. He questioned Air Sherrill about the production of the. play abroad, and particularly as to its treatment by the German producers. Mr. Si it* it iff was earlier present at the League of Nations dinner, at the Guildhall, where the manuscript of
“Journey's End” was auctioned. Sir James Barrie began the bidding at £SOO and the Lord Mayor, Sir W. Waterlow, bid £I2OO. However, the imiinicsript. was knocked down to Sir Walter Lawrence For £1509. Sir AY. Lawrence is a keen supporter of the League of Nations, and he announced that be bad bought the manuscript to lie preserved for the nation.
The auctioneer disclosed that the entire’ (‘Journey's End.” company had offered one wee'ds salary for the manuscript, but, they .bad to be told that it was not enough.
