CAPT BUCKLEY’S CRASH

NEW MACHINE SUFFERS

L lJy Telegraph, Per Press Association.!

BLENHEIM, Nov. 14

Captain Buckley, Officer Commanding at U'igram, who called in at Blenheim this morning to refuel, when en route to the Aero Pageant at Wellington bad the misfortune to crash wan his machine, a Gloster-Grebe, when taking off' from Woodburn Aerodrome. in (ontiiiuation of his Might this afternoon.

After a short run, the powerful Scout plane took the air. When it was only a few feet up, however, the pilot suddenly discovered a complete absence of control. The right wing dipped, and touched the ground, the impact causing a violent counter swing over to the left side. There was a steady westerly wind blowing down the field, whi li tilted the right wing. The left wing struck the ground heavily, dragging the nose of the machine down, and one blade of the propellor was smashed clean off'.

The left wing, crumpling up, let the plane down on its side, the engine gouging a hole in the ground. The plane skidded for some distance, and then pulled up in a badly wrecked condition.

Pilot Buckley estimates the damages at fifty per cent. This was the latest Grebe plane to arrive at Wigram, and is only about a year old. Captain Buckley snvs that the entire of the accident is inexplicable. Though the wind was heavy, it was not sufficient to cause tbe trouble, and be suspects that something went radically wrong with the controls. The machine will be taken in a motor lorry to Christchurch to-mor-

Ca.ptain Burrell immediately after the crash, took off successfully for Wellington, and an Avro Avian left just prior to the accident.
