For five years Editor Madison of “ The Chronicle ” has been trying to •expose the grafting connection between t Political Boss Patterson and Gang 'Leader Mike Corney. At last Madison fobtainA possession of a cancelled check, which gives him sufficient proof to- publish a story. Corney steals the check, .1 however.,- and Madison’s son, Joe, a reporter,; goes after it. In his chase for the check, Joe is thwarted by being forced Jo rescue a girl whom- lie describes as “ beautiful but dumb,” on two critical occasions. He goes back to his office and admits defeat, and his fathergreets him with the news that thenewspaper’s biggest advertiser * wishesthis daughter to have a reporting position on the paper. Joe offers to .{ “ break" her in,” but he discovers that his protegee is to be the “beautiful but.diimb” girl of the accidents, She is Dorothy Winston. One of Corney’s gunmen lands in jail and Dorothy partially redeems.:herself with Joe by getting hint to talk where other reporters •have failed. She learns where .the •check .‘is. hidden, but, when she tells -Joe, Corney overhears the conversation. Joe goes to Colmey's home to steal the check. He-finds it and telephones bis father to print the story. As lie bangs 'up the receiver, he finds himself covered by Comey’s gun, and Corney recover the check. Joe’s father, lacking the check to prove his printed charges true; faces a damaging libel suit, which Corney threatens to push # to the limit. 'Dorothy hears that the two schemers, flPnttersom and Corney-, have a rendezvous in a, warehouse, and she hurries there. After a series of narrow escapes: she gets the story and pfiotograhie proof of conspiracy and graft. The paper is saved, and Dorothy wins Joe. The supports include a topical, “ Collegians,’’ serial, and comedy, and the orchestra will play the incidental score.
