PARTY RAILLERY

AIR HOAVNIE STEWART MAKES COMMENT. WELLINGTON, Nov. S. A little Party raillery by Mr Dowuio Stewart enlivened the Appropriation Bill debate lor a few minute;-to-day. In speaking* of the manner in which the Labour Party had supported the Government, Air Stewart said the Government members had acquired a permanent squint looking over to the Labour Party. (Laughter.) As the session had progressed all the confidence of the Government had oozed but of them. The attitude of the Leader of the Labour Party had been interesting. Mr Holland: You are ‘just as far astray as you always are. Air C. L. Carr (Lab., Titnaru), addressing Air Stewart: Perhaps the lion. member has a permanent squint! AH Stewart said Air Holland was a comic figure. He had never known he had to vote against his co'nvictions so as not to put the Government out and the Reform Party in. “He had .the idea we wanted to get into office, 'but, as I said to him at billiards, we do not desire to go in off the red.” (Laughter.) The Hon. Air Veitch: We saw that joke in Australia five years ago. Air F. AVaitc (R.. Clutha): You might see it here yet, too. Air Stewart said the Government had been propped up for one session, but he did not think that such a tiling could continue. It was too hard work. (Laughter.) Air J. AlcCombs (Lab. Lyttelton): Who kept the Government in office 011 the public servants salaries? Air Stewart: Who kept the Government in office on the land and income tax? (Reform laughter.) The Hon. Alf Wilford: I am afraid all the lion, member’s manoeuvring has comp to nought. I do not think you have any compass. Air F. Langstonc (Lab., AYaimarino) said the Reform Party might not like “ going in off the red,” b.ut i.t had jpmped off the table altogethei. (Laughter.)
