V.C.’S DINNER

LONDON, Nov. 5. It is expected 315 holders of the Victoria Cross will attend the Prince of Wales dinner, a record gathering Tliere are now fourteen from overseas including one from India, and another batch of fifteen from Canada will arrive to-morrow. The British Legion estimates there are five hundred alive in the United Kingdom but the remainder are missing from one cause or anothpi, chiefly due to 'the reluctance of those who have fallen on evil times to iPveal themselves. It is learned that one V.C. is reduced to selling matches in the streets. When his circumstances were revealed generous offers of help have been forthcoming. Since the institution of the decoration in 1856 there have been 1157 Victoria Crosses awarded. V.O. DINNER MENU. LONDON, Nov. 5. The Victoria Cross men’s dinner menu is as follows: Empire soup. Fillet of sole, Victoria. Southdown mutton. Surrey chicken. Salad—cream of Flanders. Ice —decorated with poppy coloured Victoria Crosses. The wine trade is giving red and white wine, champagne, port and brandy. London hotels are providing the chefs.
BRITISH EMIGRATION, TO AUSTRALIA. LONDON, Nov. G. Figures just issued for the year ended June 30th last show that 10.693 assisted migrants went to Australia, of whom 2829 were single men, 2-82 were spinsters, 2729 were juveniles, also 272 were under twelve years of age. \

The British Broadcasting Company has arranged to relay the Armistice Day Cenotaph services throughout the world from Station SSW. London, commencing with the brass bands at 10.30 a.m. and concluding with the National Anthem at 11.10 a.m.
HONORARY DEGREE CONFERRED (Received this, day at 9.40-a.m.) LONDON, November 6. St. Andrew’s University has conferred an honorary Doctorate of Laws on Major Evelyn Wrench (editor of the “ Spectator ”).
A GERMAN PROTEST. (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) BERLIN, November 6. Replying to Lord Passfield’s statement in the House of Lords (cabled on 29th October) that the surplus of exenemy property already liquidated in Britain must be regarded as a closed account, the Association for the defence of German victims interests lias issued a manifesto that unless the decision is reconsidered, there t will he cause to believe that gold is of greater moment to Englishmen to-day than consideration of fair play and reconciliation.
