DUNEDIN, November 7
“You have disclosed yourself to be devoid of all sense of honesty, and to be a -fraud that no honest community would continue to tolerate,” said Judge Kennedy, when sentencing Kum Yoon Lee, also known as AVilliam Chan or Tong Sing Lee, on seven charges of dishonesty and six breaches of the Bankruptcy Act, to eighteen months’ imprisonment, and six months’ reformative detention.
Accused admitted previous convictions in the North Island.
Francis Joseph Gantlv, aged 27, married, with one child, for carnal knowledge of a girl aged 15, was sensentenced to eighteen months’ reformative detention. The judge saat the offence took place on the first- occasion accused met the girl, who- had given birth to a child, no doubt as the result of the accused’s act.
A BANK’S CLAIM
PALMERSTON N., Nov. 7
A case commenced at the Supreme Court in which 'the Bank of New Zealand claimed from Harry Cornelius, a sheep farmer, of Alangahno, £772 and interest from February, 1926. Plaintiff alleged defendant l'ramluleiity represented that sheep had been sold, delivered by him to A. D. McCardle, to the value of £750, also that commission charges, £22 10s, wore incurred.
Plaintiff had acted as bankers for AieC'ardle, whose account was at the Te Kuiti branch. In February 1926 a cheque was drawn in favour of defendant’s agents for L'772 10s, and tlie bank honoured same, under the mistaken belief that, it was in respect to the sjieep purchased by AlcCardle under arrangenemts made witli the Bank of New Zealand.
