THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
THE CTVIL SERVICE “CUT.” There is no doubt that the attitude or the Government is the correct one. There is this to be said, further, that the Prime Minister had already un- / dertalcen to go into the matter of tk salaries, and both he and the Post-master-General had given definite promises on the subject, so that the Labour Party’s motion was superfluous, if it was intended only to stimulate Government action. The inference is that Mr Holland had a further object in view, or else that he was driv- * en to move by pressure from, within his own Party, and this seems to us to have been the real explanation. —“Christchurch Times.”
