DROWNED IN AVON

CHRISTCHURCH, November 3
Albert Close, aged 18, of 168 Riclfmoiul Terrace, South New Brighton, was drowned on Saturday night in the Avon River at New Brighton, through a boat which he was rowing, filling with water and capsizing. Close was accompanied by Richard Jackson,, and could not swim. Jackson tried unsuccessfully to.keep Close afloat, but he became exhausted, and he just managed to save himself. The body of Close was recovered this morning.
CYCLE COLLISION
AUCKLAND, November 3
As the- result of a collision between his bicycle and a motor cycle near Manurewa to-day, Charles Barratt, a fanner, aged 32, sustained a punctured lung. His condition is serious.

BLACKBALL DISPUTE
MINERS’ COUNCIL MEETfNG
WESTPORT, November 3
The members of the West Coast District Council and of the National Council of Miners met at Westport on Saturday to consider the Blackball dispute over the employment of non-unionists. After a full day’s discussion, it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Executive members of the District Council and National body to endeavour to effect a settlement.
MOTOR CYCLING
WELLINGTON MATCH
WELLINGTON, November 2
Wally Ivilminster. riding a Douglas motor cycle, won the special match race at the Kilbirnie Stadium speedway on Saturday. In the first distance Ivilminster led for two laps, and then his opponent, C. R. Mackenzie, led until the last lap, when his machine fouled. Ivilminster spurted forward, and won.
In the second distance, Mackenzie led all the way, and although he nearly fell at one period, he came in first. In the third distance, Kilminster increased his lead at every lap, and ended up about 130 yards ahead of Maekzenie, who was riding a borrowed machine, a New Hudson. , . Kilminster’s time in this race, 135 1-5 seconds, was the best for the day.
AUCKLAND SLAUGHTERMEN. AUCKLAND, Nov. 2. The strike of slaughtermen at tsie City Abattoir and Hellaby’s, Ltd, was definitely ended, after a lengthy conference this morning. The award remains according to the Arbitration Court findings, but there is to be an alternative thereto. A flat rate of ten.pence per carcase is to be paid for pigs up to two hundred pounds weight, and over that weight. Is 3d per carcase is to be paid, provided that the employee executes the .whole of the work as provided by the award. It has also been agreed that tho price for long-shanked sheep shall be 43s 9d per hundred, and that for short-shanked sheep and lambs 28s 9d per hundred.
