THE DERBY WINNER

l < (Australian Press Association)

(Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 4

Commenting on the Derby result, the “ Herald” says Phar Lap is the undisputed three-year-old champion of the season. The gelding was accompanied to the course by a policeman, who remained at the stall until after the victory and then accompanied the horse off the course. Phar Lap won almost as lie liked, breaking Manfred’s 1925 record by a second, after being last away. He was held in check until the mile post, where lie was allowed to run into fourth place behind Pentheus, Taisho, and Canadale. Approaching, tlie home turn Pike moved on Phar Lap but quickly realised he had tbe race in keeping, and a furlong from home allowed the gelding to bowl along. The winner finished very strongly. Carradale bv again finishing second to Phar Lap, proved lie is the second best of the th roe-year-olds. SYDNEY, November 4. Correction.—Phar Lap broke the record by a quarter of a second. The “ Telegraph ” says, as expected, the Derby was nothing but a Cup gallon for Plinr Lap, as he won on the bit. Tbe race was all over at the distance. The gelding then was well in front and lie was not troubled over the remainder of the journey to win in a canter.
