FIRE IN STEAMER

The “Te-lemachus” limped into port after the view had fought a, fire in three holds for twelve days. On loth, October smoke was seen issuing from the hold. A party went below but gas had fonne'd to* such an extent that four men were badly affected. Hoses were played on uic coal, but two days late a _ terrific explosion occurred in another hold which lifted the hatch covers. 3he boats were then swung out and all hands .summoned on deck. Next day a third hold was found to
~e on fire and a. quantity of coal was jettisoned. Burning gas was discovered and several of tne crew were gassed. Trenches were dug in the coal along whii h hoses were carried, hut the fiames increased and it was dangerous to dig further. Wind sails were used as hoses to carry water to the holds, and one hatch was flooded!
'The seat of tho fire is bplieved to he near the bottom of the ship. Pumps are now flooding the holds..
