RECORD MAIL

REACHES WELLINGTON. NEARLY 5,300 BAGS YESTERDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, October 22. Due to .the arrival of three oversea liners within a few hours of one another, .the postal authorities were called upoi\ to-day "to handle what is said to be a record quantity of mail matter for one day at Wellington. The total quantity of inward oversea mail matter dealt with was 5296 bags and hampers, i The first' to arrive was the Maheno from Sydney, with 1480 bags and hampers, comprising an English mail via Sqez, and Eastern and Australian mails. This was expeditiously handled and cleared up not long after the disposal, of the Northern and Southern Dominion mails. The Tahiti, which arrived in. the stream from San Francisco at 2 p.m., and berthed before four o’clock, brought a' very heavy English and American mail, comprising 2700 bags and hampers. Close behind the Tahiti came the Corinthic, from Southampton, with 78 bags of specially addressed letters, and a large parcel mail, consisting of 1038 bags and hampers, a total of 1116 packages. Of the total of 5296 packages of overseas mail, approximately 2000 were for Wellington, and the whole of their “local” mail was opened and sorted to-day. In addition all the southern portion of the three mails and most of that for dispatch northwards ivAs got away to-night.
