OKURU STOCK SALE. To'obtain the best quality cattle procurable on the West Coast, is the desire of most fatteners of beef, and even distance will not daunt keen buyers, when they know that the cattle to be sold are equal to any grown in New Zealand.- ibis’ was the case last week, when all roads led to Okuru and the Haast, on the occasion of Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd’s inaugural sale in that district, buyers being present from Greymouth in the north to Gore (Otago) in the south. It was evident that the quality of the South Westland cattle was not only recognised on the Coast, but in Otago and South Westland as well, as the long journeysfrom Weheka and Central Otago did not stop those in search of good cattle, from making the trip. Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd. report on the sale as follows:—
The first to be offered was the land, live and dead stock in the estate of the late John Mcßride. The property, comprising 30-5 acres of freehold and 1050 acres of renewable leases, was offered first, and under steady competition, was sold to Messrs Nolan Bros, for £4 an acre. A good attendance of buyers keenly competed for all live stock entered, tile following prices being realised—On account; of estate of late John Mcßride, Okuru: —3o cows with calves at foot at £9 2s 6d; empty cows at £8 ss; 28 2-year steers at £9 7s 6d: 14 2-yenr heifers at, £7 12s 6d; 38 M.S. yearlings at £8 2s 6d: hacks and harness horses at £l3 and £ls 10s; young, light, draught horses at £9 to £lO ss. On account of Harris Bros., Huhuka, 22 2-year-old steers at £ll 15s; 18 2-year-old steers at £lO 10s; 15 heifers at £ll 7s Cd ; 18 heifers at £lO 15s; 6 cows at £l2 12s 6d. On account of Nolan Bros., Okuru:—42 3year bullocks at £ls 2s 6d; 22 3-year bullocks at £l3 15s ; 40 3-year heifers at £l2; 17 3-year heifers at £lO 17s Cd; .5 cows at £lO ss. On account of McPherson Jiros., Okuru : —1 bullock £l2; 6 heifers at £l3. On account of. J. Crbn, Haast: —46 3-year bullocks at £ls 7s Cd; 15 heifers at £l3 os. On account of E. Cron, Haast: —16 bullocks at £l6 7s 6d; 1 heifer at £ls; 5 heifers at £l3 15s. !
The top price for the sale was secured by My E,. Cron,' for a line of IS fat and forward bullocks at £l6 7s 6d, Mr W. piedriebs cf Kokatahi being the purchaser. The second highest price was secured bv Mr John Cron, for a line' of 46 store bullocks at £ls 7s 6d, Mr Diedrichs again being the purchaser, whilst the third highest price was secured by,Messrs Nolan Bros, for a line of 42 forward 3-year-old bullocks. Mr M. Sullivan being the, purchaser, at £15,2s 6d. The sale was held in brilliant sunshine, and quite a picnic was made of the day, the ladies of the district providing a light luncheon. Alto* gether, it was a great day for Okuru, everybody being pleased with the venture, the vendors with the. prices, ajnd the buyers with the cattle.
