A Gazette has announced that the medal of the Military Division of the Order of the British 'Empire has been awarded to Flight Cadet AlcKechnie for his gallantry when an aeroplane, on June 20th, piloted by Flight Cadet ■Giles, crashed "at Cranwell aerodrome, and burst into flames. Giles was stunned, but he managed to release the safety belt, and he fell out of the machine, dazed. McKechnie, landing i[n another aeroplane two hundred yards away, ran to the scene of the crash, and the full speed petrol was then in full blaze over an area of ten yards. Giles was in the midst of the flames in a semi-conscious condition. McKechnie, without hesitation, ran into the flames and pulled out (Giles, who was badly burnt, with his clothing actually burning. McKechnie, who was scorched,' extinguished the flames on Giles’ clothing. Meanwhile the machine was in full blaze and the petrol was spreading, making it certain that Giles would have been burnt to death, as he was incapable of moving. The machine was ultimately completely 'destroyed.
