United Press Association-By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).
(Received this day {ft 10 a.m.) OTTAWA, October 18,
The gathering which -Mr Ramsay MacDonald addressed to-day was one of the most distinguished which he has so far face on his American tour. Round the white horse shoe, which was the banquet table,-were grouped the Prime Minister of Canada, the Leader of the Opposition, members of Cabinet. Privy Councillors from all .parts of the Dominion and highest members of the judiciary. That the words of the speaker, whether grave, or gay, found a ready response 'in the minds of those present was indicated by the constant applause. That his mission had the support of the leaders of the Canadian people was amply testified by speeches, of Premier King and Mr R. B. Bennett. The honour in which Mr >. MacDonald was held was indicated, when the Premier announced Cabinet had passed an Order-in-Council conferring the rank of Privy Councillor upon the visitor Agreements were of no value, Mr MacDonald averred, if they were merely temporary agreements on paper. “ The kind of agreement that would keep i the world in peace must be made only after common confidence had been established between two peoples, who had made the . agreement. An agreement which was not embodyment of confidence was one of those scraps of paper torn un when convenience , necessitated. \Viith a fatherly note in his voice Mr McDonald spoke of .the relationship between ,the Mother country and the Dominions, hound together by nothing more than allegiance to • the Crown, which symbolised unitv. Premier King assured Mr MacDonald of the whole-hearted sympathy with which Canada had reviewed his efforts in the cause of peace. "It might not be through the weary blood-stained road of war we may yet come to the sunlight path of peace. Nothing less than that is worth the sacrifice of war and when through war, war shall have been abolished, then and not until then, will victory he complete.”
