WOOL RECOVERY. (Australian Press Association) SDNEY, October 17. At to-day’s wool sales, 8,33-5 bales were sold. There was spirited competi:ion Ifor all the best descriptions, which sold from par to five per cent higher. Average and faulty sorts were from 7$ to 10 per cent higher. There were excellent clearances. Greasy merino brought up to 19£-d. LAND AGENT GAOLED. BRISBANE, October 17. "William Rode, a land agent, was sentenced, to .five years’ imprisonment for theft of £2,99.2. The Crown.alleged that Rode failed to account altogether for twenty thousand pounds which he received from nine persons on account of land transactions.
CONVICTED OF MURDER. SYDNEY, October 17. Convicted of having murdered Henry Skinner on August Bth, near Wagga, Frank Nolan was sentenced to death. The police gave. evidence that Nolan’s fingerprints were identical with those of a man of .another name who had served seven years imprisonment in Wellington (N.Z.) for manslaughter. MRS MORT RELEASED. SYDNEY, October 18. Mrs Mort was released last night from the Long Bay gaol. . • ■■ It is understood that plans are being made to-send her either to America or New Zealand.
COAL TROUBLE. NO SOLUTION PROBABLE. SYDNEY, October 18. It is not anticipated that any solution of the coal problem will be found as a result of conversations between Mr Theodore, and coalowners and officers of the Miners’ Federation. Mr Theodore’s proposals are practically a renewal of those made on different occasions during the past seven months by the miners, namely, the re-opening of the mines on conditions existing, before they were' closed down. There is not the least likelihood of the owners agreeing to this. PRODUCE PRICES. MELBOURNE, October 18. Wheat is 5s sd, flour £l2 15s, £l3, hran and pollard £7 15s, oats 4s 2d. barley (English) 4s Id, maize 5s 7d.
