The Annual Ball of the Kumara Cricket Club will be held on Friday evening next in the Memorial Hall.

The Westland Acclimatisation Society during the past few days has liberated a number of brown trout fry in the Kokatahi and Koiterangi streams. The fry lias been in excellent condition, indicating the care and attention devoted to the hatching by the caretaker, Mr S. Ridlands.

Mr Joseph McLean, Chairman of the GreymoUth Harbour Board, writing from Geneva (Switzerland) on the 4th. of last month, says: “We are at present “doing” the Continent, and are now located at Geneva, where the Conference is sitting in the memorial building to Woodrow M ilson, President of America. We leave her for Berne, Lucern, Berlin, Dresden, Brussels and Flanders, and hope to return to Scotland in October.

The drainage operations at Grooves Swamp, South Hokitika, are being carried on actively by the lately formed Flaxmilling Company. A number of men are employed on the work under contract, and the results of the drainage are considered most satisfactory. The drainage is being taken into Monts Rivulet, a clear water -stream which finds its way into the Hokitika riven at Upper’ Back Creek. Good fall is obtainable for the drainage, and a large area of good land will he won hack from the swamp and will he utilised for flax production on a large scale. The enterprise in hand is a substantial one, destined to employ considerable labour in its development.' ■ '

The flax-milling propos’tion in the vicinity of Retold no Swamp, Mount Hercules district, South Westland, is likely to take definite shape in the near future. This is largely a Canterbury enterprise, a considerable area of freehold having been secured for flaxgrowing and production under the latest methods. There is a large area to be drained, and the surplus water will be carried into the Wataroa river. Where drainage has been carried out already, a rich chocolate soil is revealed, and should be capable of rich returns in noduction. Road access will be required to reach the scene of operations, where workmen’s homes are to be erected, and the operating site estabished. There is a road reserve serving the location where the plant will be established, and the matter of reading will be gone into shortly by the authorities. This enterprise is another one involving a considerable outlay, a® the plant is Fkely to be operated electrically, and there will be considerable labour employed, while all the transport will be by the main highway over Mount Hercules.

The death took place at ICanieri on Saturday evening of Mrs Alice Harcourt, aged 61. The deceased had been in ill-health for a number of of the late Mr. and Mrs James Rugg,.. a well-known family c(f Kumara.
