PARLIAMENT

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, October 11. The Legislative Council met yesterday at 2.30 p.m. Hon. Galland moved that in view of the vital importance of meteorology in aerial navigation, especially of airships, (and also in agriculture), the Council urges the Government to take steps: (1) to ensure teaching of meteorology in public schools and in one at least of the university colleges, and (2) to increase the staff and equipment of the Meteorological Office sufficiently to enable it to provide a complete and modern service, particularly for aviation and agriculture, and so to be enabled to devote adequate time to research into special problems of the Dominion. The motion w 7 as carried by 29 to 6.

In connection with the latter vote Mr Wilkinson moved that the sum_ be reduced by £lO as an indication to the Government that control of the million sterling grant for highways maintenance by public servants without check by Parliament, was not in the best interests of the country. Mr Holland (Duller) moved the vote of £2,639,398 for Post Office account be reduced by £2'-as a recommendation to the Government that the salaries of employees in the Post and Telegraph Department should be restored to the 1922 standard. The debate is proceeding.
