DEPUTATION TO .MINISTER

A deputation from the Women Teachers’ Association met the Hon H. Atmore to-day. Speakers dealt especially with the principle of differentiation between male and female teaeh-
Mr Atmore said that a new system of grading which had been effective elsewhere, was under consideration and he hoped it would remove much of the present difficulties regarding salaries. As to women head teacherships, the department had not a great deal of power. He thought that the payment of salaries according to efficiency was quite a legitimate aim and was prepared to do what he could. He did not think he could agree to the request that there should be no discrimination between married and single women in the matter of appointments. There was a growing feeling against allowing a woman with a husband at work to compete in the educational labour market.
