RANDWICK RACES

NIGHTMARCH BEATEN

(Australian Press Association)

SYDNEY, October 7

The weather and large attendance favoured the A.J.C. for the second day of its spring carnival. The New Zealand horse Ceremony, after its brilliant Tramway Handicap victory, was a popular fancy for the Shorts, but lie ran poorly throughout, never once raising his supporters’ hopes. A further disappointment awaited New Zealanders in the richly endowed Breeders Plate. Pomp, which carried the pronounced support of his connections, was not able to do better than gain second place. The outstanding performance of the day’s racing was that given by Nightmarch in the Metropolitan Handicap, carrying a ten pounds penalty, due to its Epsom victory.’ The horse ran prominently throughout, and looked like a winner at the distance, but a brilliant finish by Loquacious robbed him of victory in the final strides.

New Zealand’s “ iron horse,” First Acre, brightened what was otherwise a disappointing day if or his-countrymen by winning the Squatters’ Handicap in smart fashion. Results:— .*
