HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 7th. I The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present: Messrs A. C. Armstrong (Chairman), H. Sweney, R. Pedder, W. Shannon, W. E. Richards, Mrs Wilson, and J. Conning (hon. sec.). Apology was made for the absence 'of Mr Chesterman. r Hie minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Canterbury Schools Committee Association in reference to holidays being taken in July instead of August owing to the small attendances in July pwing to illness and asking for an expression of opinion.—Received ; no action was taken. From Health Department urging .a dental clinic committee for the dental district, and stating the department could not provide funds for expenses. Received. Mr Richards moved that steps-.be taken to form a district dental clinic committee. Seconded by the Chairman. In this connection the Visiting Committee (Mrs Wilson and Shannon) reported that they had met the departmental officer in regard to dental clinic affairs and the report was also discussed in connection with the letter.
Mr Shannon mo ’ed an amendment that the Committee first write to the Department asking if they had carried out 'the promise of their officer, when he visited Hokitika that the Department would circularise all district committees affected. Seconded by Mr Pedder. The motion with the above amendment included was. then agreed to.
It was resolved that Mrs Wilson, Messrs Armstrong, and Shannon represent the Committee on the proposed Committee to meet on the first Monda vin November. ■ , .
From Dental Officer reporting in August there were treated 130 and Sep* temher 120.—Received. It was resdlved to ask for particulars from which schools the patients treated came from. From Minister of Education, Wellington (through Mr J. O’Brien, M.P;), advising the Committee to apply to the Education Board in connection with the request for assistance to procure the freeholds in front of the school.— Received.' Mr Shannon suggested that an application should be made for a fn-smt from Hokitika Savings Bank. Leift to the Chairman to report'to a lateroneeting.
Accounts as scheduled were passed
for payment. From Rector (Mr E. Partridge) reporting for four weeks the attendances were 273 and 93, 283 and 100, 284 and 95, 260 and-104, for primary and secondary,- Mrs Dale liad been absent owing to tlie serious illness of her daughter. The school fair had proved very successful and had resulted in a profit of £Bl 19s 6d and with £8 13s 6d fuel money, 'totalled £9O 12s 7d. Reference was made to the school football teams games. _The school choir had been successful at the Competitions. Thanks were due to Mrs Butler, Messrs Stevenson, L. S. Ross, arid A. W. Yarrall for donations to the school grounds. South Spit school was being to the Hokitika school and would be used for the Commercial Classes. At the end of the year there will be 6 or 8 girl shorthand typistes available for engagement as they would then have finished their commercial course. Miss Duff was preparing a programme for. the school concert in December in connecf/ion with the presentation of prizes. A number of requirements were mentioned.—Received. The Chairman moved a hearty vote off thanks to the Rector and staff and the scholars for their work in connection with the Fair and for the splendid result of their labours. Seconded by M,i; Richards and carried.. A grant of £2 10s was made towards the cost of the school football team’s tour to Westport. It was resolved to thank the High School Board for the supply of extra typewriters.
It was resolved that the Ground Committee meet the Rector and report on requirements to the next meeting. The Committee rose at 8.50 p.m.
