Gerhault (avlio has made ocean voyages alone in his tiny craft the Fire Crest, duriiig a long absence) has decided to quit European civilisation for ever, for the reason that since his return he'has been lionised throughout France, all of which is foreign to his nature; He has- no instinctive longing for freedom, preferably in the great spaces such as the sea affords. A neAv boat, smaller than the'Fire Orest, is being built for him at present he will shortly be, proceeding southeastAvard, Avhence he declares, he will not return. .He plans to live on a small Pacific Island Avhich Avas presented to him on his last voyage. This will be peopled by natives of his choice. Tlie Fire Crest’s roving days have ended, as M. Gerhault is having her cemented into a cliff fronting the Atlantic, Avhere she Avill he.gradually destroyed by the action of sun, sea and' Avind.
Summing up his intentions, M. Gerbault said: ‘‘l am not a hermit through sickness or love. lam .in love only Avith the sea.” ' .
