CONVICTS REVOLT
BATTLE AT PRISON. THE. HANGMAN KILLED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. ) NEW YORK, 'Oct. 4. -At Canon City, in tlie State of Colorado, one thounend convicts in the /verciowdcd State Penintentiary riotjd. They seized a dozen of the guards ind -also ex-S-enator Colgate, who was /isitiiig the prison, as hostages, lioldn them in the captured prison arselal. .'iiiey warned tiie Warden that they would kill the hostages unless they .vere allowed their freedom.''
Thereupon the Warden refused, and the prison hangman was murdered, and trie other hostages were in the greatest danger. Five guards and one convict were killed. The Warden’s stenographer summoned a force of the militia, and men from the Fire and Police departnents.
One thousand armed “volunteers” are also assisting them, in an endeavour to obtain control, but, due to the position of the hostages, the Warden is unable to decide how to reply to ..the convicts threats. ■■t -
