THE AIR RACE
TWO MACHINES OUTED. "(Australian Press Association). (Received this day at 8 a.m.) V ■ SYDNEY, October 4. Two airplanes in tlie trails- Australia race from Sydney to Perth have crashed. The occupants were uninjured. Heath’s D.H. 40 lost a wheel attempting to land between Cook and Forrest desert country, near the West-i-alian border to-day, and smashed both propellors, also the other wheel. All the occupants, including the Sydney “ Herald ” representative were severely shaken. The machine is now out of the contest, although practically leading. The other machine forced down, due to engine trouble, was Lee Murray’s Gipsy Moth, which is also out of the contest. PROGRESS OF FLIERS. (Received this daV at 9.25 a.m.) ADELAIDE, October 4. A report from Forrest, Western Australia, states the leaders in the air race are Miller, De Haviland, Pratt, and Cunnignham. It is stated that Heath s big ’plane touched tlie ground when Hying at one hundred and forty miles an hour. Lee Murray remedied his defect and has reached Forrest aerodrome.
