LARGE BUILDING BURNT
1 WAjIPUKUBAU, Sept. 24. At 4.20 o’clock this morning, a well known landmark, Devonshire board- . i'nghouse, two storeyed, of. seventeen rooms, was totally destroyed by fire. The building was owned by A. E. Jull, of Waipawa, and was leased }>y Mrs A. B. Meinung. Seven boarders escaped in -their night attire and all are heavy losers.. The origin appears to have started in the kitchen, the cause being unknown. The (building was twentyfour , years old, and was formerly known as Tavistock Hotel. Mro Moinung’s furniture and effects were insured for £270. Insurance on building is unknown. . A fireman, Arthur Green, had his hand cut by. falling iron, ' several stitches being necessary.; _ ■ . One boarder was badly singed, and all had a narrow escape.
