COAL FIRE EXTINGUISHED. (Australian Press Association). ALBANY, Sept. 23. The fire in the coal cargo of the Knockfierna has been extinguished by flooding the holds. NEW STEAMSHIP SERVICE. (Received this day at 9.25 a.m.) • MELBOURNE, Sept. 23. The Minister of Customs (Mr Gullett) denied that the omission of Hobart as a port of call for. the new steamship service being established between New Zealand and Melbourne was due to the operation of the Common wealth Navigation Act. Mr Gullet added that there was no truth in the report that the omission was due to the provisions of the coastal clauses of the Navigation Act. \ It was greatly to lie hoped that Hobart would be included in the itinerary, for the new service would be of great advantage to Tasmanian trade.
IN THE AIR. BRISBANE, September 23. 'The “ Canberra,” piloted by Captain Holden, with the Prime Minister (Mr Bruce), his wife, and small party arrived here four and a-lialf hours . after leaving Mascot aerodrome. The plane received a severe buffeting by a gale and two of the passengers were air sick.
