Private Daniel Smith, of the Army Service Division, and Radio Operator Deuter were together in the rear seat of a bombing plane two thousand feet above the Gatun Lake, when Smith stumbled and fell through the bombing compartment. He grabbed the tape of the parachute, on which Operator Deuter was sitting, and drew Deuter’s parachute with him. Smith pulled the ripcord of'his own parachute, and he landed safely. ( The pilot and two observers who were aboard continued flying, being unaware of the accident until they later discovered Deuter. unconscious.
