CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING
The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday ; present: Messrs It. Wild (chairman), W. J. Preen, G. W. Armitage, C. .S. Thompson, J. G. Gow, E. H. Andrews,.i W. Johnson, W. H. Winsor, W. P. Spencer, W. A. Banks, and H: J. Bignell.
-Miss M. C. Daly was appointed solo teacher at Okuru.
Statutory Period of Service.—A circular was received from the Department giving interpretations and ridings dealing with teachers transferring from one position to another.. •
Council of Education—Copies of minutes of the last meting of the Council were received, and it was Resolved that in accordance (therewith steps be taken for 1 the 1 establishment* of district high schools at Hawarderi and Rakaia. •;
A letter was received from the Canterbury School Committee’s Association expressing the opinion that vacuum cleaning of interior of schools might now be introduced, and suggesting that a vacuum plant be by the Board and sent round to schools for cleaning purposes. It was resolved to inform the Association that the proposal was not practicable, and tljat committees have the privilege of obtaining vacuum cleaners qn a £ for. £ subsidy basis. DENTAL CLINICS 7 ■
Tho Department wrote informing the Board that the Health Department had intimated that there were no more nurses at present avilable, .and that the next draft would complete their training towards the end. of March next year, and would then be ready, to take charge of new clinics. The Department advised that in the circumVe stances it did not propose to recommend any grants towards the cost' of erection of dental clinics until early, in tlie new calendar year. It was resolved to record the Board’s protest at the Department’s decision. . Mr Spencer spoke of the had effect of the Department’s attitude regarding dental clinics on the-Papanui School. "
Mr Wild said; lie had been'informed that a qualified dental nurse had applied for employment with the Department, hut had been refused it. On his motion it was agreed to inform’the Department that qualified women dentists were available for clinics, and to ask for an explanation of the Department’s attitude. . • * Figures supplied showed that a Surprising sum is raised by school committees by voluntary effort to improve school buildings and grounds. There ■are 366 school committees in . ■ theboard’s district. During the year ended Fobruary last they raised; n 6 less tha» £10,254. “ This return is > very creditable,” Mr R- Wild (chairman) committees raised nothing.”' Aixj.jGr.., W. Armitage said that the return: did not include expenditure on labour.}^Jt was misleading. Great work had been done by some committees, ,by headmaster c mid by members of their staffs. Mr Wild said that the labour employed probably whs worth £SOOO at least. Mr W. H. Winsor said that the figures were only approximate. ‘' The total is impressive,” Mr E. H. Andrews said.
