ALPS VILLAGE BURNT OUT.
VEVEY, Switzerland, August 1. '
Thousands of tourists at resorts along the shores of Lake Geneva for several hours last night watched the spectacle of a whole village on fire. About 11 p.m., while a thunderstorm of exceptional violence was raging, a chalet on the outskirts of Torgon, a hamlet I,oooft. above the Rhone, was struck by lightning. It burst into flames and the fire, fanned by a gale, spread quickly to the whole 20 habitations.
The villagers dashed out in their night clothes and were able only to rescue a few head of cattle. Otherwise all they possesed was consumed. The populations in the towns down in the valley were awakened by the tocsin, but by the time sappers were able to make the two-hours-and-a-half climb to Torgon nothing remained but a glowing mass of embers.
They were met at the entrance to the village by a who, with tears streaming down his cheeks,, pointed-to 100 hobbling people who had been rendered homeless.
Thunder and lightning were almost continuous during the fire and a sort of whirlwind did great damage to forests and property elsewhere.
