PRISONER SHOT
TRYING TO ESCAPE,

AUCKLAND, Sept. 20,
A sensational happening occurred in Mount ’ Eden Prison at half-past four this afternoon. While working in the prison yard, John Buckley, aged 27 years, a habitual criminal, slipped away, and attempted to escape by scaling the outer wall. Buckley had actually scaled the wall, and lie was running in the open ground on the other side, when he was detected. A warder shouted to him to stop. Buckley did not stop. Then the warder fired, wounding Buckley in the back.
Buckley was taken to the Auckland Hospital, and his condition to-night was stated to be serious.
Buckley is the notorious burglar who escaped from Mount Eden Gaol last year, and was at large for over seven weeks.
