NEW STATION SITE
MASTERTON FIRE BRIGADE
MASTERTON, Sept. 13,
Definite action in the direction of acquiring' a new fire station site was taken by the Masterton Fire Board at its quarterly meeting this morning, when it was decided to negotiate for the purchase of a property at the corner of Chapel and Renall Streets, belonging to' the Pragnell Estate. It was generally agreed that the most suitable area offered was the above-mentioned. The total area is 198 feet by 143 feet, which, it is considered, will provide ample space for the new station, with a drill yard in tlie rear, anti also for a number of cottages.
There was some discussion as to whether the board should acquire the whole area or should exclude a section now occupied by a house, the chairman favouring acquiring the whole area, while Mr W. A. Parton, thought that with the section excluded the board would have all the land it would need for many years to come. Eventually it was decided to refer tue matter to Inspector Hugo, Mr Parton stating that if a report was received that the additional land was required ho would be prepared to fall in with the idea. It was decided that an effort should be made ta reach finality as soon as; possible;., tlie new aiea would have to be cleared of mortgage, which might take three or four years, before a new station could be built. The disposal of the present building and site would provide part of the funds needed.
Eventually, on the motion of Mi Parton, seconded by Mr Jenkins, it was agreed that local members get in touch with the owners of the land to ascertain the bedrock price for the whole or part of the area, and the terms of payment, and that the proposition then he submitted to Captain Hugo for his report.
