IN PALESTINE

BATTLE STOPPED BY TINY BRITISH FORCE.

vßritish Ofhoal Wireless.)

LONDON, Sept. 15. How fi British non-com and nine men belonging to the Green Howards Yorkshire - Regiment, 'stopped a battle in Palestine is related by the Daily Mail’s special correspondent at Nazareth. He says: It was one of the most dramatic incidents of the whole trouble. The non-com’s party, which was the only force available, was hurriedly dispatched from Nazareth to a neighbouring village to hold armed raiders in check, pending the arrival of reinforcements. They found strong forces of Jews and Arabs facing each other in battle array, with dead on either side. Despite the strength of the combatants, the non-com unhesitatingly and courageously marched his little detachment between the rival forces, defying them to lire on the British flag. The Arabs drew back, and the Jews, who were the weaker, were glad of the interruption, and they retreated. Presently more Green Howards arrived. The Arabs then became more belligerent, and they began firing, but luckily this was harmless. Lancers then dashed up in an armoured car, and they began encircling the raiders, for the purpose of securing their arms, without bloodshed. The armoured car, however, broke down, and the Arabs then dashed through. Forty of the Green Howards pursued them, and a running fight resulted, the Arabs losing sixteen dead and wounded. Later they came in and surrendered their arms and ammunition, pledging themselves not to participate in any further disturbances.
