TRAGEDY ON STEAMER
RACE WITH DEATH.

AUCKLAND, Sept. 16
When the Hain Line steamer Tregonnell was forty-five miles west of the Three Kings Island yesterday, bound from Westport to Nauru Island, the second engineer, Reginald Nicholas, was found in his bunk bleeding profusely from a wound in the throat, and a penknife was lying near his ihght hand. N First aid w r as given, but as there was no doctor on board, the master of the vessel decided to make for Auckland. The race to this port 274 miles away, ;■ was started yesterday morning, and the Tregonnell arrived here this evening. The effort, however, was in vain, as Nicholas died half-nn-hour before the steamer reached Auckland harbour. The deceased was a married man, 37 years of age, and he lived in Barry, in South Wales. He had been on the Tregonnell for eight months.
