l United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.- -Copyright.)

LONDON,. September 14

Lord Melchett, in accepting the Chairmanship of the Council of the Empire Producers’ Organisations, issued a statement in which he says that the peace and progress of not only the Empire, but of the world, would depend largely on a sane, well-founded Empire economic policy, free (from the distorting effects of party controversy. There was no more important factor in this respect than the organisation of producers on an Empire-wide basis.

He continues: “ I regard Empire free trade as the guiding ideal. It is the genius of Britons to obtain the best practical results from that ideal,' without sacrificing legitimate local needs and aspirations. We must create throughout Britain a faith in the Empire. It is of vital importance to our unity in peace and war. Its resources, capacity for consumption, markets, and development are so vast that we have only touched the fringe of them, and it is impossible to say what the limits would be.”
