DEATH FROM. INJURIES,

Leonard Joseph Fox, aged 6 years, died iii the hospital, from - a ruptured lung as the result of being struck yesterday by falling timber.

The high standard attained in New Zealand in connection with the telephone system was mentioned at the telephone cut-over function on Saturday night. A plea was also made for reduced rates but the Postmaster-General announced that before a reduction in rates came, he hoped to be. able to give increases in salary to the staff. “ Our telephone and postal services are conducted at loner rates than in almost any other country in the world,” he said.
CHARGE OF ASSAULT
DUNEDIN, September 16
Charged with assaulting his wife and causing bodily harm, Alexander Smith was remanded this morning till Wednesday. ■ .
The police stated it was alleged that accused went home intoxi- ated, and struck her on the head with a beer bottle. The full extent of the injuries are not known. ,;
; Accused was released on bail, on p, doctor’s statement that he should have treatment at the hospital for a lacerated shoulder.
WAIKATO TRAGEDY INQUEST
HAMILTON, Sept. 14,
At the inquest on Errol llees Milne, who was gored by a bull at Otorohanga yesterday, the evidence showed. the deceased was a -strong, active young man. He had seized the bull by., the horns, but failed, to overpower it, and he suffered fearful gashes in thelungs, abdomen and thigh. Miss Rhoda Glover, -an .'Australian-,girl, visitor, tried to set a dog. on to'the, bull, without success. 'Then she called . neighbours by telephone, and asgisfanpe. arrived too late. Milne died in : the hospital last, night. He/was #5 years of age, arid was employed on the farm of Mrs Selbie.

A MISER’S HOARD.
DUNEDIN, Sept. 16.
A man'named Jitdd, aged 86 years, who for twenty years, bached under deplorable' conditions at Owaka With sacks for bedding, died last week. He had to his credit in the bank £2500 with further interest in property, bringing his estate up to £3OOO. He has no relations in New Zealand, the whole estate going to a relation in Ontario.
A HOUSE, DESTROYED.
AUCKLAND, Sept. 16.
A family of seven had a narrow escape from being burned to death when a house in Ot'ahuhti'.was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. Giles, the owner and occupier, wiis in bed listening to the wireless, when he fell asleep. He awoke to find the rooiri .in flames and rushed; to the room where his children were peeping arid - got tKein out safely. . The- liouse and contents were insured for £570.
SCALDED TO DEATH. AUCKLAND, Sept, 16.
Cyril Hobbs, a young man einployed by the Public Works Department, was severely scalded by the bursting of a steam cap on a railway engine. He died at the hospital last night. His parents reside at Tawa Flat deviation.
