NEWCASTLE, Sept. 13
There was a dramatic development in the coal trouble to-day, when fen pairs of drivers and firemen, employed on the South Maitland railways, were dismissed by the, §outl| Maitland Railway Company, which handles coal from mines and which outside the Northern .Collieries’ Association. >
These drivers and firemen had been ordered by their Union to refuse to dra w any more coal ..from those mines which have been working ever since the lock-out last March.
The stoppage of this course of coal supply will have a serious effect on the passenger trains and gasworks.
SYDNEY POTATO FAMINE.
SYDNEY, September 13
There is an acute shortage of potatoes at the city markets. New Up-to-dates are selling at the rate of £4O per ton. ’’ HThe Sussex Street merchants assert that the public is being imposed upon by washed Tasmanian and Victorian tubers, which were bought at £l9 per ton, and are selling as new potatoes at £3/ 6s 8d per ton.
ACQUITTED OF MURDER
SYDNEY. September 13
At the Criminal Court at Sydney to-day, the jury acquitted James Devine on the charge of murdering George on July 18th. Devine, who was discharged, declared that he shot Gaffney in self-defence. ATTEMPT TO StJICIDE. (Received this dav at 9.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. •'l4. A second struggle at “The Gap” within a week occurred last night. A constable noticed a woman crying near the edge of the cliffs and grappled with her and eventually carried her bodily to safety. A note was /found in the woman’s bae stating she intended lo commit suicide. ’
LAMB LOSSES.
SYDNEY, ' Sept. 14
Tremendous losses of newly shorn sheep are reported in Scone district, following torrential rains' and C9M. Some stations lost a thousand head. : A conservative estimate of the losses is thirty thousand.
ELECTION FORECASTS. j • SYDNEY, Sept, 14.
The constitution provides that Parliament shall meet not later thirty days after the return of the writs, the date for which will be about November 12th. It is anticipated, therefore, the new Parliament will 'lre called together towards the end of November.
Mr Marks said he would contest the Wentworth electorate whether he was selected or not.
