It was certain, he said, that if the coal owners, recognising the serious position of their industry would agree, the House of Commons would he quite willing to back such an enterprise, in the same manner as it agreed to assist the railways:
SPEED BOAT RECORDS. VENICE, September 12. Segrave’s Miss London retired after a record lap in the Prix de Venice, in which there were six starters. The winner was the Italian Montelena, who attained a speed of 51 miles an hour.

Kingsfprd Smith will shortly be going to America but has indefinitely abandoned the trans-Atlantic flight. Probably he will be flying the Southern Cross to Australia v in an attempt to beat his own time.

The Labour Party’s report records a decline in membership from 3,293.00" in 1927' to 2,077,000 last year. This is attributed to the difficulties due to the Trades Union Act.

LONDON, Sentember 11
The Belgian steamer Estrella of 758 tons sank in the Scheldt after a collision with a German steamer. Two of the crew were saved and thirteen and the pilot were drowned.
