RACE WITH DEATH
FLYING A PATIENT TO HOSPITAL. (United, Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 11 a.m.) VANCOUVER, Sept. 11. Completing a thousand-.nile air race with death, Pilot W. El. Gilbert reached Vancouver to-day, carrying H.. C. Hughes, a mine superintendent of Ootsa Lake, who was seriously mauled by a grizzly bear. His condition \vas so critical that physicians ordered his immediate removal to Vancouver. A nurse accompanied the injured man. Hughes lost a finger, and his face was badly chewed and bruised, and he was clit about the body and legs. He owes his life to his presence of mind. When lie met the huge animal he lay down and feigned death. The bear picked him up, threw him down, and mauled and left him.
