THE COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

THIRD DAY. •Proceedings for the third day 'of the Westland Competitions began in the Princess Theatre *at the appointed hour this morning. There was a very interesting programme, .including musical monologues, songs in ; character and duets. The children's dialogues were a feature, and indicated something of the material advance being made in the general standard off the .work produced. It is interesting to note that test pieces which were set 's for adults two years ago, are now .'.being .performed by the juveniles, -'pip ■ ' 'V j’ ...>( . He had been regretting there was not more classical, and the choice in the dialogues was very refreshing. The speech and enunciation had been very good. The weakness was the lack df characterisation—the difficulty to distinguish between the two characters. The contrasts should have been brought out. Strong contrasts were necessary in some instances. .The- acting of the: boys was good and they stood out in tlie marks accordingly. .
