GRANTS FOR ROADS
DUNEDIN DEMANDS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.), DUNEDIN, September 9. At a largely attended meeting of representatives of local , bodies and others intersted to-day, presided over by Mr Black (Mayor), the following resolution , was carried That this meeting of representatives of counties y and other local bodies, motor associations, chambers of commerce, and re- , sidents cf Dunedin and Otago, strong-|ir ly protests against the decision of the Government to withhold the sums of £200,000 and £35,000 as free grants from the Public Works Fund and the Consolidated d<’und respectively to the 1/. Alain Highways Board, as provided, by the Alain Highways Act, and further consider that, notwithstanding any legal opinion thb Government may have obtained, such opinion does,not justify the present action, and that the present Government is morally bound to honour the obligation which the date Government entered into with .the counties and the motor -associations.
