THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
LARGE AIILITARY ISSUE. The British Foreign Secretary seems disposed to buoy up the anticipations of the Preparatory Commission with prospects of results following in the train of the Anglo-American conversations on the navy question. What the. British Government may do in this matter remains to be seen,, but it certainly behoves it to proceed cautiously, for it would be highly unfortunate if tlie efficiency of the navy upon which tlie Empire is dependent for security were interfered with merely as a concession to American arguments. It is ijor the League to tackle, when the time seems ripe, what must appear the major problem of disarmament, that which consists in the military aspect. —Otago Daily Times.
