Under the Australian migration agreement with Britain, which loaned 84 millions to Australia, there have been 3,294 migrants already settled on the land, the majoiity in Western Australia. The sum of £9,UQO,(LO has already been absorbed. WOOL BALES BURNT. SYDNEY, September 5. A fire at loovale scouring works in the Bourke district destroyed 700 bales of wool, valued at £30,000. LABOUR’S THREAT. TO STOP ALL INDUSTRY. (Received this day at -9.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 6. 1 The total paralysis of industry throughout the State for twenty-four hours, was proposed at a Labour Council meeting, if the seven timber strike leaders are convicted of conspiracy. The proposal met with general approval. A conference of the executives of all Unions will be called to consider the matter or devise other means of registering a protest. MENACE OF GANG ‘WARFARE. •SYDNEY, Sept. 5. Remarkable stories of gang warfare in the Alexander ditsrict; with tlie Town Hall as the battle ground, were told by an Alderman at a meeting of the Council, He stated that he and the Mayor had been threatened, and he had applied for permission to carry a revolver. On the .last three occasions these functions, were held in the Town Hall. There had been serious fights, and the police,had to subdue them. Two men were taken to the hospital as the result of the fights. 'Die Council decided to confer with the police for the protection of the district from gangs. FEDERAL POLITICS. A LIVELY SITTING. CANBERRA, September 6. In the course of an all-night sitting of the House of Representatives, Mr W. M. Hughes bitterly attacked the Prime Minister for “breaking his pledges,’ ignoring the platform on which he’was elected and betraying the people.” Mr Hughes said if the Arbitration Bill parsed the second read'ng he would move in committee an amendment that it remain in abeyance until the people were consulted.
