WARNING TO MOTORISTS

CASE IN MAGISTRATE’S COURT

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 3

“I do not press for a fine in this case, as I. am bringing it chiefly to call the attention of motorists to the matter,” said the Chief Motor Inspector, Mr H, Macintosh, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Bernard Ciossen was charged with failing to stop at a railway crossing where a “Compulsory stop” sign was erected.

Mr Macintosh said that he had been under the impression that the matter was one for the Railway Department, but his attention had been drawn to the fact that it came under the Motor Regulations. *‘l don’t remember having seen any of these signs” said Mr E. O. Levvey, S.M.

“They are yellow discs, with the word ‘Stop’ on them,” said Mr Macintosh. ‘‘They mean that a motorist must pull up. and look before crossing.” The defendant was convicted and discharged. The regulation states that every driver of a motor vehicle shall stop his vehicle opposite or as near as may he opposite to any traffic sign, which designates a compulsory stop. After the vehicle is so stopped he shall not cause it again to move until it is reasonably apparent that its moving will produce no danger to the vehicle, its occupants, or any other traffic. The signs, which are placed at the worst crossings, are 4ft. 6in. high from the ground, and contain the words—- “ Stop; Compulsory,” in black letters against a yellow background. They are octagonal in shape.

It is understood that further cases will come up for hearing on September 16th.
