HARBOURMASTER DEAD.

—Captain P, Mclntyre, harbourmaster at Wanganui port from June. 1912, to July of this year when ho re-tired on six months leave, owing to ill health. He traded in New Zealand coastal service for many years. ••

At the Supreme Court this morn-;-ing before Justice Kennedy,. Moss ' Wylie (a student; was charged with negiig i illy or recklessly driving a motor car,. thereby causing the death of Alagnus Laing. His Honour, addressing the Grand Jury, said if it found that a motorist travelling along a straight road at dusk, with his lights on, ran down a cyclist going in the same direction without knowing until the time of the impact that the cyclist was there, it would have no difficulty in deciding that the motorist was not keeping a proper look out, or that lie was driving so fast as to make the precaution unavailing. The Grand Jury found a true bill.

A FIRE

PALMERSTON N., Sept. 4. A fire at 3.35 a.m. caused considerable damage to premises in Rangitikei St. owned by A. Guy and occupied by G. H. Fitt, motor car painter and upholsterer. Four cars were almost totally destroyed-. One .belonging to Fitt was uninsured, - and the others were covered by owner’s private policies. The building, stock and plant were insured, but the amount is unavailable.

The other portion of the building occupied by J. McGrath, painter and upholsterer, was slightly damaged.

NARROW ESCAPE FROM FIRE CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 4.

A fire this morning destroyed a five roomed house tenanted by H. C. Robinson in Kilmore 'Street. Ihe family were awakened at 1.15 a.m. by the baby crying, and escaped in night attire, just before the roof fell in. The outbreak probably started in the kitchen.
