BISHOP ON SUBMARINES
“DEVILISH FORM-OF WARFARE.”
, LONDON, July 18.
The Bishop of Winchester (Dr Woods), who presided at the concluding session of the Anglo-American Religious Conference, held at St. Mar-tin-in-the-Fields, London, praised the play “ Journey’s End,” which, he said, should go far to cure any appetite for war which still rerhained. •
“There is,” he went on, “ an agitation we can-help to foment on both sides of the Atlantic. That is for the abolition of that abominable method of warfare, the'submarine. .. “ We-bow* :o.ur heads in homage (for the heroism of those men who found a watery grave off the Welsh coast this week. < There are kundretls of men ready to face precisely, the same fate, but most thoughtful people must agree that of all instruments of warfare the submarine is the most abominable. It is purely destructive, and it is contrary to every notion the Anglo-Saxon has of clean fighting and 'fair play. This peculiarly devilish form of warfare need not go on if the naval Powers would agree to discard it. I have not the slightest doubt that the smaller nations would agree to it, and the two greatest naval Powers, the United Stntes and Great Britain, would accept it if they had their way.”
