The return match between Bailor and West Coast senior representatives was played at Victoria Park Greymouth last Saturday afternoon, tlie weather being ideal, and the ground in perfect condition. There was an attendance of about 20CO spectators and they were treated to a . high standard of Rugby, the match proving to he easily the best and most spectacular'exhibition of the code given in Greymouth during the present and past season. It was bright, open football with .the speed clapped on all the way, by both teams. The surprise of the match was the splendid manner in which the home backs handled the ball. Time/ and again it would travel by snappy transfers along the whole line to the wings, and on occasions back infield again to the delight of the large crowd. West Coast played with fine .understanding both forwards and backs combining in pretty movements which sorely troubled the visitors. Buillei Wore by no means outclassed, but the excellent standard shown by the Coast backs proved too much for the visitors,'. v /.
For the Coast tries were scored 'by Davidson (2), Jamieson (3), Hagar, .King, /two being converted/by Bef.l rind J. King kicked a penalty goal. For Duller White, Jones and Connelly scored tries, Graham converting two. - JUNIOR MATCHES. ' ■ ' GRANITY ROVERS DEFEAT COAST. Playing at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon the Granity Rovers defeated- the West Coast Junior representative “B” team by 11 points to 9. For. the winners Mann ami Hayeldean secured tries, Smith converting the latter score, and Nichob kicked a penalty goal. Sorensen secured a. try for the home team and O’Donnell kicked two penalty goals. v
’OBDEN DEFEAT ROSS. At Victoria Park on Saturday, the Cob den junior team played Ross juniors, Cbbden winning after a fast game, by 11 points to 6. Eggleton. Taafe and Mead each secured a try for the winners, Lindbom converting one. For Ross, J. Wright and N. Inglis scored -a try each,.

Weather conditions were all that could be desired for the Wairarapa, Southland Ranfurly Shield match, here to-day. The attendance was about four thousand. Tire teams were: Southland : B. Morris full-back; L. Stubbs, F. Townsend, F. Anderson, L. Porter, B. Bell (capt), T. Holden; forwards J). Mahoney (wing); S. Agnew, L. George, T. Galt, G. Purdie, H. McKenzie, R. Bird, T. Metcalfe. Wairarapa were the same telim .that defeated Canterbury; L. Roach (fullback); R. Cnndy, C. Stringfellow, F--Fuller, A. E. Cooke (capt), T. Corkhill, •J. Mill; (forwards: J. Donald (wing); W. Winning the toss Southland played down field setting such a pace that Wairarapa appeared to be standing still. The Wairarapa backs set up an attack which, carried .play to the Southland 25. A free kick here gave Fuller a fair chance to goal, but he missed. The Southland forwards then asserted themselves, good kicking ' by Porter putting them in a strong position. Play on the Wairarapa’half saw the. home side penalised for off side work, Porter taking the kick and landing a very fine goal from ten yards inside the half way. Immediately after, Wairarapa again infringed this time out side their 25 and Porter sent down another beauty. With Southland still on attack Porter had a clear chance to pot a goal and took it well which brought the score up. Southland 10; Wairarapa nil. The speed otf the Southland forwards kept Wairarapa on strict defence only occasionally allowing the redoubtable back division to get going. A fine run by Corkhill Cooke and Fuller saw the latter enter the Southland 25, where a melee followed, Southland being penalised and Fuller landed a penalty goal. Following on this success, Mill brilliantly cut in and sent on to Corkhill Cooke, and Stringfellow, the latter racing round to touch down near the poles. Fuller failed with an easy kick Southland 10 Wairarapa. 6. A brilliant forward rush by. Wai.rarapa ended in touch in goal. Another Wairarapa back attack failed badly when Stringfellow failed to take a pass from Cooke. Townsend ' snapped up the ball and broke away. , When tackled by Roach he passed to Mahoney who scored near the poles. Porter kicked a poster. Southland 13 Wairarapa 6. Southland were still attacking when half time came. There was great expectations aboutwhat Wairarapa would dp in. the second
half but Ifor once the team failed to respond. Southland continuing a vigorous offensive Bell initiated a splendid move ment, the backs passing the ball right /across the field to Porter, who streaked past Stringfellow, then passed to Anderson who sprinted for the corner. Roach tackled but Anderson punted over his head and Wairarapa luckily forced. Wairarapa then came to light instituting a series of pretty rushes which carried play near the Southland 25. Fifteen yards inside the lmlf-way Fuller snapped up and potted a magnificent goal for Wairarapa. The forwards continued the pressure and an jntfrigement in front of' the goal gave Gundy a long chance and he sent over a brilliant kick bringing the score thirteen all.
Excitement then ranged high, but Southland pursued their tactics of fast following up, bustling the Wairarapa hacks effectivbly. Tackling Bird who had got rid of the ball, gave Porter an easy chance to goal and he took it well. The visitors proriiptly initiated another forward rush led by Mahoney but Gundy forced. Galt, Mahoney and Holden next handled attractively, carrying play right over the line again but Wairarapa forced. In a passing rush Wairarapa. carried play back to the Southland 25 but Porter intercepted nicely arid ra.ced away upfield Roach and Cooke both tackled him high but lie carried them with him to within two yards of tin? line where lie passed to Bird, who ’scored a. foot from the pole. The kiqk was disallowed for mishandling. Southland 19, Wairarapa 13. The home side then exerted every effort. Gundy was brought into first live-eight, and Corkhill went' to the wing. The backs made many fierce attacks but the defence stood solid: Tho ball going out at’the corner Mill received from the scrum and cutting in passed to Cundy Cooke 'arid Stringfellow the latter racing in to round near the goal. Again Fuller v missed tin kick. Southland 19 Wairarapa 16. Wairarapa were still attacking ’ strongly when time sounded and the Ranfurly Shield changed hands.
S. CANTERBURY’S CHALLENGE IN. TIMARU, Sept. 1. The South Canterbury Rugby Union has issued a challenge to Southland for the Ranfurly Shield, suggesting September lltlv as the date of the match. HAWKE’S BAY BEAT MANAWHENUA. NAPIER, August 31. Hawke’s Bay defeated Manawlionua by 32 points to : ID- to-day in a game which, although not brilliant had interesting stages.. .M. In the first .half tries for the Bay were scored by Steere, Smith and McKay while Grenside and Setford converted one each. For Manawhenua T. Pnrata, Bell , and Walker scored one being converted by Akuire. Tries in the second half were obtained for Bay Iby Grenside (2), McKay, Steere and Wilson, two of which were converted by Setford. For the visitors, Strange scored both tries and Tatama converted one.
S, CANTERBURY BEAT N. OTAGO. TTMARU, August 31. South Canterbury defeated North Otago in the return match to-day by 19 points to 10. The game was fast and open throughout, but the home team dominated play till ten minutes from time, when they eased up, tinvisitors securing two unconverted tries. In the junior match South Canterbury defeated North Otago by 14 to 9. r'-' THE PEACE CUP. HAMILTON, August 31. The Peace Gup matches resulted:— Hamilton 38, FranJUin 3. At Matamata, Tauranga 8, defeated Matamata 6. WIN FOR MANAWATU. - PALMERSTON N., August 31. Manawatu defeated the combined Oroua and Te Ivayvau Sub-Unions at Palmerston North ,by 24 to 9. ASHBURTON A BEATS OTAGO B. DUNEDIN, August 31. The Otago B team and Ashlburton met on the Carisbrook ground this afternoon in beautiful weather. Ashburton proved the better side, and won 'by 30 points to 16. SEDDON .SHIELD. BLENHEIM, August 31. Showing superiority in both forwards and backs, Golden Bay (challengers) to-day won the Seddon Shield from Marlborough, who gained possession of the trophy from Nelson lasi week. There as a word attendance, and the weather was brilliant. Bay held the advantage in the scrums and lineouts and had much the larger share of the ball. Their backs showed fair combination coupled’ with straight and determined running. Though fast in the loose, the Marlborough forwards showed poor ball control, while the. backs were futile in face of the deadly opposition < and tackling. Clark opened the Ray’s Spore with a beautiful try from a passing bout, touching down between the posts.

Hollyoake scoring an unconverted try, There was no further ■ score, Golden Bay winning by eight to nil. AUCKLAND DEFEAT CANTERBURY. AUCKLAND, August 31. The representative B,ugby match between Auckland and Canterbury, played at Eden Park to-day, resulted in a win for Auckland by 17 points to 6. Auckland scored three tries, two of which were converted, and Hook kicked a field goal. Canterbury, scored two unconvewted . tries. Play was fast and exciting throughout, and the final scores in favour of Auckland were by no nueans an mdi■,cation of the. play. For Auckland, McWilliams, Minns and L. Knight scored tries, two of which were converted by Corner. L. Hook also dropkicked a goal. ■ For Canterbury Manchester and Lines scored tries. The conditions were ideal and there was an attendance of about 13,000 spectators.
