The steamer San Juan, the captain of which.is Adolphe. Asplund, was ram-' med by the tanker Dodd, south of Hall' Moon Bay, twelve miles from an isolated mountainous shore. The tanker saved twenty-seven,. but was badly injured. itself, and had to leave for the shore. , A lumber earner reported saving,ten .'others, The fate of the remainder is unknown, for they had to leap for their lives as the ship listed. Many'who were asleep went down with the ship. The San Juan was an old boat. Captain Asplund, aged 65, who had retired, took command olf the San Juan when the owners asked him to , substitute for. the usual commander, who was on vacation in London. 1 74 LIVES REPORTED LOST. Early estimates show forty were saved. Later, the reported loss of life was estimated at seventy-four. The San Juan foundered five minutes after the crash in a dense fog.
